The "Rules" of Improv at a Glance

1.      No Blocking.

  • Say “Yes! And…”

  • Say the first thing that comes into your head – don’t censor yourself.

  • Avoid asking questions.

2.      Make your partner look good.

  • First line of dialogue tells us who are.

  • Give them something to work with.

3.      Don’t try to make the scene funny.

  • You cannot “bend” an actor or a scene to make them do what you want them to do.

  • Stick to the character you’ve created; stick to the story, and stay in the reality of the scene.

4.      Use your location.

  • When running out of ideas, use/do something that is relevant to where the scene is taking place.
